Sub: The Fourth SAP Science Olympiad to be held at AKU-IED

                          From 9.00 am – 2.00 pm on September 24, 2005

 

Dear Colleague,

 

The Science Association of Pakistan (SAP) is organizing its Fourth Science Olympiad for grade VIII on September 24, 2005 at The Aga Khan University - Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), Karachi.

 

This Olympiad is a part of our continual efforts to make teaching and learning of science rejoicing and rewarding experience for both students and teachers. During the event, the student will get an opportunity to participate and compete in various science activities such as puzzles, problem solving, and construction. The winners would be awarded with shields and certificates and all participants would be provided with certificates of participation. A team could be accompanied by a science teacher or a representative from the school management staff.

 

Please fill the attached registration form and send it along with Fee (Cash or Pay – Order) in the name of AKU-IED to Mr. Farhan Jiwani at PTAN Office by September 10, 2005.

Registration for SAP Olympiad:

 

·        Registration fee for Class VIII is Rs. 800/-

(Covering 3 Students & 1 Teacher).

·        Registration fee for an additional teacher is Rs. 200/-

·        Government schools would be allowed 50% discount.

 

 

 

Criteria to participate in the Fourth Science Olympiad

 

·        The Olympiad will be held on September 24, 2005.

 

·        Each Institute / School is invited to send 03 students from class VIII with one of their Science teachers / representative of school management.

 

·        A jury will decide winners, and its decision will be final.

 

·        Entry in the Olympiad is open to all. All the entries will be entertained on first come first serve basis.

 

·        Last date for Registration is September 10, 2005.

 

·        There are three levels of competition. Each team is required to compete for all three levels. Level one is a puzzle round. Level two is problem solving, & Level three is construction. It is compulsory to participate in all three rounds.

It is mandatory to participate in all three categories; some more information about each category is given below:

 

1.     Puzzles

 

Puzzles will be given for testing the students’ scientific knowledge.

     Assessment Criteria

·        Scientific knowledge

·        Team work

·        Time management

 

2.     Problem Solving

 

Problem solving is an investigative approach to learning. It requires students to use a variety of skills to acquire results.

In this category, a problem or situation along with material will be given. The students will be required to solve the problem by choosing the appropriate method and material.

 

     Assessment Criteria

·        Identification of the problem

·        Selection of the appropriate material and scientific solution.

·        Time management

·        Team work

·        Understanding of the task and concept.

·        Solution of the problem.

 

3. Construction

 

The students will construct a working model by using the appropriate material from the material given.

     Assessment Criteria

·        Application of the appropriate scientific concepts.

·        Functioning of the model appropriately.

·        Time management.

·        Team work.

·        Explanation and application of the concept.
